Where to install

For Exchange migration using EdbMails, the application can be installed on:

Direct installation on the source Exchange Server is recommended.

Client Workstation: Any workstation that can connect to both the source and target servers.

Hosted Exchange and Office 365 Migration: Install EdbMails on any machine that has network access to both the source and target environments.

Supported operating systems

Ensure that your system has the latest updates installed before using EdbMails. The application supports both 32-bit and 64-bit Operating systems.

Hardware

To ensure smooth operation of EdbMails Exchange Migration, your system should meet certain hardware requirements. At a minimum, the system should have a 1 GHz processor, 512 MB of memory, and 20 MB of free disk space. For optimal performance during installation and migration tasks, it is recommended to use a system with at least a quad-core CPU and a minimum of 4 GB of RAM.

Size on disk after installation

Size of the installation file

  • Installation of additional components (like .NET Framework) requires approximately 100 MB of available disk space
  • The application does not store the migrated data in any temporary location on your local disk.
  • Meta-data for incremental checks uses only the minimal disk space required.
  • EdbMails requires an Internet connection only to authenticate login credentials and verify the number of available and used mailbox licenses.
  • If you are migrating your Exchange server to Office 365, an Internet connection may be required to transfer your mailbox data.

Migration source

EdbMails supports migration to any version of Exchange Server starting from Exchange 2007. Supported targets include:

  • Exchange Server 2019
  • Exchange Server 2016
  • Exchange Server 2013
  • Exchange Server 2010
  • Exchange Server 2007
  • Windows Small Business Server (2008 and later)
Required accounts and permissions

Connection to source Exchange Server

  • The application login user must be an administrator.Must have a valid, working, non-hidden mailbox in the source Exchange server.
  • Must have a UPN (User Principal Name) configured, and it must match the admin’s primary SMTP email address.
  • Must have the following roles assigned:
    • ApplicationImpersonation
    • View-Only Configuration
Additional components

Based on your environment, the following components may need to be installed:

  • Microsoft .NET Framework, required on all systems.
  • Windows PowerShell, required on all systems.
  • If you are exporting to PST, Microsoft Outlook must be installed on the system.

Migration target

EdbMails supports migration to all major Exchange versions starting from Exchange Server 2007. The following targets are supported:

Admin account rights

An admin account used to connect a target server:

  • Must have a UPN (User Principal Name) configured, and it must match the admin’s primary SMTP email address.
  • Must have the following roles assigned:
    • ApplicationImpersonation
    • View-Only Recipients
    • View-Only Configuration
    • Public Folders (required only if migrating public folders)
    • The account must be mailbox-enable

Hybrid Envionment Migration

Source Server

  • Migration from a hybrid environment is supported.
  • Connect to on-premises Exchange to migrate on-premises mailboxes.
  • Connect to Microsoft 365 to migrate cloud mailboxes.
  • Create separate migration jobs for on-premises and Microsoft 365 mailboxes as needed.

Target Server

  • Migration to a hybrid environment is supported.
  • Migrate data to on-premises Exchange mailboxes or Microsoft 365 mailboxes.
  • Ensure admin accounts on both environments have the required roles and permissions.
