Office 365 Impersonation Rights Using GUI
The ApplicationImpersonation RBAC role is no longer available in Exchange Online. Microsoft retired the RBAC role and removed its feature set in February 2025, so the older Exchange Admin Center steps for adding ApplicationImpersonation through Discovery Management should not be used for current Office 365 migrations. EdbMails now connects to Microsoft 365 using modern authentication and application registration. Use Auto Registration when signing in with a Global Admin account, or follow the documented Manual Registration method when you need to provide the application details yourself.
Is ApplicationImpersonation still available in Exchange Online?
No. Microsoft retired the ApplicationImpersonation RBAC role in Exchange Online. New role assignments were blocked beginning in 2024, and Microsoft announced complete removal of the role and its feature set in February 2025. As a result, the older Exchange Admin Center procedure that added ApplicationImpersonation to Discovery Management is no longer a valid setup method for Exchange Online.
What to use with EdbMails now
For current Office 365 connections, EdbMails uses modern authentication with Microsoft sign-in and application registration. Choose the connection method that matches your administrator access and deployment requirements instead of trying to assign the retired ApplicationImpersonation role.

Auto Registration
Use Auto Registration when you can sign in with a Global Admin account that meets the EdbMails connection requirements. EdbMails manages the required application registration in Microsoft Entra ID as part of the connection process.
Manual Registration
Use Manual Registration when you need to register the EdbMails application yourself and provide the application details during connection. Follow the current EdbMails manual-registration instructions and grant only the permissions required for the migration workflow you are using.
What happened to the old GUI procedure?
Earlier Exchange Online workflows allowed administrators to add the ApplicationImpersonation role through Exchange role management. Microsoft retired that role, so screenshots showing Discovery Management and the ApplicationImpersonation role should be treated as historical references rather than current configuration steps.
