Understanding the upgrade process and version changes
Keeping your EdbMails migration software up-to-date ensures you have access to the latest features, improvements, and security enhancements. Here’s a simple guide to understanding version numbers and performing upgrades safely.
Understanding version numbers
The current application version is displayed at the top of the main EdbMails window. Versions follow a four-part pattern:
Example: 6.1.0.34 → [major].[minor].[maintenance].[build]
What each number represents:
- Major: The first number indicates significant software updates that introduce major new features. These changes are rare and denote substantial improvements.
- Minor: The second number updates with planned releases that add new functionalities or enhancements. Check the release notes for details on minor updates.
- Maintenance: The third number changes when unplanned fixes are released, typically to resolve urgent issues or bugs that cannot wait for the next minor version.
- Build: The fourth number represents small updates, including bug fixes, UI tweaks, security patches, or performance improvements.
Understanding these numbers helps you track updates and know what type of changes each version introduces.
How to upgrade EdbMails
Follow these steps to update your EdbMails software safely:
- Download the latest installer from the official EdbMails download page.
- Run the installer on the machine where EdbMails is currently installed.
- Close the application if it’s running. The installer will automatically terminate the program during the upgrade. You will need to resume any paused migrations manually after the update.
- Repeat the process on all other machines where EdbMails is installed in your environment.
- Launch the updated software. All previous settings will be retained, but ongoing migrations must be manually resumed.
