Can I restore selected SharePoint content?

Yes, for supported protected items — a file, folder, library or site scope.

Does Microsoft 365 Backup also offer granular restore?

Yes. Microsoft currently supports granular SharePoint file and folder recovery, so EdbMails differentiates on repository control and cross-tenant restore.

What is the smallest scope I can recover?

Recovery can target supported individual items up to a broad site scope; use the narrowest scope that resolves the incident.

Can granular backup protect only part of a site?

Yes. Select specific libraries, folders or content rather than the whole site when that is all that needs protection.

Can I restore granular content to another tenant?

Yes. Select only the required content and target the same or a different Microsoft 365 tenant.

Will permissions and metadata be preserved on a granular restore?

Verify any business-critical permissions and metadata explicitly after restore rather than assuming they carried across.

When should I use a full-site restore instead?

When a whole site has been deleted or widely changed, a broader restore is more efficient than recovering item by item.

Does granular restore overwrite existing content?

Choose the target location carefully and use the narrowest scope needed to avoid unnecessary overwrites; validate the result after restore.

How do I decide between file, folder and library recovery?

Match the scope to the incident: a single file for one deletion, a folder for related files, and a library when many files in one library are affected.

Where is the protected copy stored?

On storage you select and control, such as local or network storage.

How do I confirm a granular restore worked?

Open the recovered content in SharePoint, confirm it is in the intended location, and validate business-critical permissions and metadata explicitly.

Granular SharePoint Backup and Restore

Granular SharePoint backup and restore lets administrators protect and recover a precise scope, a specific site, library, folder or supported item, instead of only working with an entire tenant. EdbMails supports selective protection and recovery of supported SharePoint content, stored on a location you control. For the main product page, see SharePoint Online Backup.

Selective protection File to site recovery Cross-tenant restore Storage you control

What granular backup and restore means

Granular backup narrows the protected scope to what matters, selected sites, libraries, folders or files, rather than indiscriminately protecting every site. Granular restore then narrows recovery to only the affected content when the protected data is available. Together they keep both backup and recovery proportionate to the business need.

Narrowed backup scope
Protect only the sites, libraries, folders or files that matter to the business.
Targeted recovery
Restore only the affected content when the protected data is available.
Proportionate effort
Keep both backup and recovery sized to the actual business need.

Recovery granularity levels

Level	Typical incident	When to use
File	A single document deleted or overwritten	Narrow, low-risk recovery
Folder	A folder of related files removed or changed	Contained recovery without touching the rest of the library
Library	A document library damaged or heavily changed	When many files in one library are affected
Site / site collection	A whole site deleted or widely changed	Broad incident where item-by-item recovery is inefficient

Common granular recovery scenarios

A deleted file that is past the convenient native recovery window.

A deleted folder of related documents.

A damaged or heavily modified library.

Selected site content that must be recovered without a full-site restore.

Specific content recovered into a different tenant.

Choosing the correct recovery granularity

Use the smallest recovery scope that solves the problem. A single file deletion should not trigger a full-site restore, and a site-wide incident is inefficient to recover item by item. Matching the scope to the incident reduces recovery risk and limits unnecessary overwrite exposure in the destination.

Granular restore vs full-site restore

Granular restore

Use granular restore for narrow incidents, a file, folder or a single library.

Full-site restore

Use a broader site or site collection restore when a large scope has been deleted or widely changed. The goal is to recover exactly what was lost without disturbing content that is still correct.

Granular restore for cross-tenant scenarios

Granularity also reduces how much content is moved when the destination is a different tenant. Select only the required sites, libraries or content rather than restoring the entire protected environment. See restore SharePoint backup to another tenant.

Native granular recovery and independent backup

Microsoft 365 Backup also supports granular SharePoint file and folder recovery, so the useful distinction is not whether granularity exists but where the protected copy lives and how you control it. EdbMails differentiates on an independently stored, customer-controlled repository and supported cross-tenant restore rather than on granularity alone.

Granular restore validation

After recovery, verify the restored content in SharePoint itself: confirm users can open the recovered files and that the content appears in the intended location. If permissions or metadata are business critical, verify them explicitly rather than assuming they were preserved.
