Can I back up selected site collections only?

Yes. Select the required site collections rather than protecting every site in the tenant.

Can I restore a site collection to another tenant?

Yes. The existing product content supports same- or different-tenant restore.

What content does a site collection backup include?

Supported content such as sites, libraries, lists, folders, files, OneNote notebooks, events, tasks and contacts within the selected scope.

How is site collection backup different from library backup?

Site collection backup protects a broad scope across multiple sites and content types; library backup targets a specific set of files within a site.

Can site collection backups run incrementally?

Yes. After the first full backup, later runs can process only changed content.

How should I prioritize which site collections to protect?

Classify them as critical, important or archival by ownership, change rate and recovery need, and set backup frequency and testing accordingly.

Can I recover just part of a site collection?

Yes. Use a granular restore for a file, folder or library when the whole collection is not affected.

Where is the site collection backup stored?

On storage you select and control, such as local or network storage.

Is a completed backup job enough to trust the copy?

No. Validate restores of representative content with the site owner rather than relying on job status alone.

Can I preserve a site before decommissioning it?

Yes. Backing up an inactive site collection before decommissioning keeps a recovery copy for later verification or recovery.

Does a large site collection affect backup time?

Yes. Size, item count and change volume, along with Microsoft 365 responsiveness and repository performance, affect duration; no fixed speed is guaranteed.

SharePoint Site Collection Backup

Protect site collections and restore supported SharePoint content

A SharePoint site collection can hold documents, lists, pages, libraries and collaboration content across many users, so a single incident can affect several content types at once. EdbMails can protect supported site collections and restore them to the same or another Microsoft 365 tenant, with the copy stored on storage you control.

Why back up SharePoint site collections?

Because a site collection groups related sites and content, the impact of an accidental deletion, a bulk change or a departing-owner cleanup is rarely limited to one file. Protecting at the site-collection level gives a recovery source for the whole collaboration space, not just individual items, which matters when an entire department or project area is affected.

What EdbMails can protect

Site collections

Communication sites

Team sites

Libraries and lists

Folders and files

OneNote notebooks

Events, tasks and contacts

How to back up a SharePoint site collection

Create a SharePoint backup job and select the repository.
Connect to SharePoint Online with the required administrator access.
Load the available sites.
Select the required site collections.
Start the backup and review the logs.

Site collection backup use cases

Protect department or business-unit sites.

Preserve inactive sites before decommissioning.

Maintain recovery copies of project sites.

Prepare for tenant consolidation or restructuring.

Recover a site after accidental deletion or unwanted bulk changes.

Site selection and prioritization strategy

Rather than protecting every site identically, classify site collections as critical, important or archival, using business ownership, change frequency and recovery requirements. That classification then drives backup frequency and how much restore-testing effort each collection deserves — critical, high-change collaboration sites justify more attention than static archives.

ClassificationCritical

Typical sites

Active, business-critical collaboration or project sites

Backup approach

More frequent backups and regular restore tests

ClassificationImportant

Typical sites

Departmental sites with moderate change

Backup approach

Regular backups; periodic restore tests

ClassificationArchival

Typical sites

Inactive or historical sites retained for recovery

Backup approach

Less frequent backups; verify retained copy

Incremental site collection backup

After the initial full protected copy, later runs can process only changed content, which is efficient for large, active collections. See SharePoint incremental backup.

Restore a site collection

Protected site data can be restored to the same tenant or to a supported alternate tenant. For a broad incident, a site-collection restore is more efficient than recovering item by item; for a narrow incident, use a smaller scope instead. See granular SharePoint backup and restore and cross-tenant restore.

Site collection vs document library backup

Site collection backup

Protects a broad scope — multiple sites and content types. Use it when a whole collaboration space matters.

Multiple sitesMany content types

Document library backup

Targets a specific content set within a site. Use it when the concern is a particular set of files.

One librarySpecific files

See SharePoint document library backup.

Site collection restore validation

After a restore, verify libraries, lists, folders, files and relevant site content with the site owner. Do not assume success from a completed application job alone; where permissions or metadata are business critical, confirm them explicitly in SharePoint.

Libraries and lists verified with the site owner

Folders, files and site content checked

Permissions and metadata confirmed explicitly
