Can EdbMails restore SharePoint backup to another tenant?

Yes. The current SharePoint product content states support for restoring backed-up data to the same or a different Microsoft 365 tenant.

Can I restore only selected sites across tenants?

Yes. The workflow supports selecting the required SharePoint scope rather than restoring the entire protected environment.

Is cross-tenant restore the same as migration?

No. Restore recovers from protected backup data; migration normally transfers live source content as part of a planned move.

What access is needed on the destination tenant?

Administrator access with the rights required for the target SharePoint sites, confirmed before the restore begins.

Do target sites need to exist before restore?

Decide this in the mapping plan. Confirm whether each target site already exists or must be prepared first.

Will permissions and metadata carry across tenants?

Verify any business-critical permissions and metadata explicitly in the destination after restore rather than assuming they were preserved.

When is cross-tenant restore typically used?

During tenant consolidation, mergers, divestitures, recovery into a replacement tenant, or disaster-recovery testing.

Can I test a cross-tenant restore safely?

Yes. Test a small, low-risk restore into a prepared destination before relying on the process during an actual incident.

Does cross-tenant restore move the whole environment?

Only if you choose to. Selecting specific sites or content reduces the data moved and keeps recovery focused.

How do I avoid content landing in the wrong place?

Build and review a source-to-target mapping covering site existence, URLs, naming and ownership before starting.

What should I check after a cross-tenant restore?

Confirm user access, verify critical content is present in the intended locations, validate business-critical permissions and metadata, and document any configuration that needed manual recreation.

Restore SharePoint Backup to Another Microsoft 365 Tenant

EdbMails can restore backed-up SharePoint content to the same Microsoft 365 tenant or to a different one. Cross-tenant restore is useful when an organization is consolidating tenants, completing a merger or divestiture, recovering into a replacement tenant, or testing disaster recovery. For the main product page, see SharePoint Online Backup.

Same or different tenant Selective restore Disaster-recovery ready

When cross-tenant restore is useful

Tenant consolidation

Bringing sites from several tenants into one.

Merger or acquisition

Moving acquired SharePoint content into a corporate tenant.

Divestiture

Establishing a separated business unit in a new tenant.

Recovery into a replacement tenant

Rebuilding after a tenant-level problem.

Disaster-recovery testing

Validating recovery into an alternate tenant.

How cross-tenant SharePoint restore works

1

Select the protected backup source
2

Connect to the destination Microsoft 365 tenant with administrator access
3

Load the target SharePoint environment
4

Map source sites and content to the correct targets
5

Start the restore and review the logs

Prepare the destination tenant

Before recovery, verify destination administrator access, confirm the target sites exist or will be created, and review the mapping plan. Decide whether each target site already exists or must be prepared first, and check destination URLs, naming and content ownership so recovered content lands in the right place.

Source-to-target mapping considerations

A clear mapping plan is what prevents mistakes during cross-tenant recovery. Review site naming, destination URLs, administrator access and content ownership before you start. Where a site structure differs between tenants, decide the target layout in advance rather than improvising during the restore.

Mapping element	Why it matters	Action before restore
Target site existence	Content needs a valid destination	Confirm the site exists or prepare it first
Destination URLs / naming	Affects where content lands	Document source-to-target naming
Administrator access	Restore needs destination rights	Verify admin access on the target tenant
Content ownership	Post-restore access and responsibility	Confirm owners for recovered sites

Restore selected sites only

Move only what the business needs

Cross-tenant restore does not require restoring every SharePoint site. Select only the sites, libraries or content that belong in the destination, which reduces the amount of data moved and keeps the recovery focused on what the business actually needs.

Cross-tenant restore vs planned migration

Backup restore

Use backup restore when the protected copy is the intended recovery source, for example, recovering content into a replacement or consolidated tenant.

Planned migration

Use a dedicated SharePoint migration workflow when live source content is available and the goal is a planned tenant-to-tenant move.

The two solve related but different problems, and choosing the right one avoids unnecessary work.

Cross-tenant validation

Confirm that users can access the target sites.
Verify that critical content is present in the intended locations.
Verify business-critical permissions and metadata explicitly in the destination rather than assuming they carried across.
Document any tenant-specific configuration that requires manual recreation.
Test a small cross-tenant restore before relying on the process in a real event.
