How ransomware reaches OneDrive

OneDrive synchronizes files from users' devices. When a file is encrypted, overwritten or deleted on an endpoint, the OneDrive sync client can propagate that change into the cloud, so the damaged versions appear in OneDrive too. This is why "it's in the cloud" is not the same as "it is backed up": the cloud copy reflects whatever the endpoint pushed, including malicious changes. An independent protected copy from before the incident is what makes clean recovery possible.

Why native protection may not be enough
