Can EdbMails restore selected OneDrive content?

Yes. The current product material supports granular backup and restore of OneDrive files and folders.

Can backed-up OneDrive data be restored to another tenant?

Yes, according to the current EdbMails OneDrive feature and guide content. Prepare the destination tenant first.

Does OneDrive already have recovery features?

Yes. OneDrive includes version history and recycle-bin recovery, and Microsoft offers the native Microsoft 365 Backup service. An independent backup adds a separate, customer-controlled copy and restore workflow.

Where is the OneDrive backup stored?

On a location you select, such as a supported local disk, external drive or network/shared storage. Your organization controls the repository.

How often should OneDrive backups run?

Base the frequency on your RPO and how often each account changes. Active users usually justify more frequent runs than dormant accounts.

Can I restore a whole account instead of individual files?

Yes. Choose the recovery scope that fits the incident — a file, a folder, or broader account content.

Do I need Microsoft 365 connectivity during backup and restore?

Yes. The live OneDrive source is read from Microsoft 365, and restores write to a Microsoft 365 destination, so connectivity and valid administrator access are required.

How do I confirm the backup is recoverable?

Run periodic restore tests of representative content, review job logs, and validate recovered files in OneDrive rather than relying on a completed job status alone.

Does incremental backup keep the copy current?

Yes. After the first full backup, recurring incremental runs process new or changed content to keep the protected copy close to the live account.

Is an independent backup necessary if we use Microsoft 365 Backup?

That depends on your recovery objectives. Some organizations are satisfied with native recovery; others want an independently stored, customer-controlled copy and supported cross-tenant restore.

Can backups and restores be limited to specific users?

Yes. Both backup and restore support selecting only the required accounts, folders or content rather than every user.

Why OneDrive for Business still needs a backup plan

Microsoft 365 runs on a shared-responsibility model: Microsoft keeps the OneDrive service available, but protecting your own content against accidental deletion, bulk changes synced from endpoints, and departed-employee cleanup remains the customer's responsibility. OneDrive includes version history and recycle-bin recovery, and Microsoft now offers the native Microsoft 365 Backup service, yet many organizations still want a copy they store and control independently. A plan is complete only when it defines both how the copy is made and how data will be recovered.

Plan OneDrive backup and restore as one workflow

What is backed up

Accounts, folders and supported content

Where the copy is stored

The repository you select

How often jobs run

Recurring backup schedule

How you restore

Files, folders or broader account content

Treating backup and restore together avoids discovering a recovery gap only during an incident.

How EdbMails OneDrive backup and restore works

Back upSteps 1–6

1Create a OneDrive backup job and choose the repository.
2Connect to the Microsoft 365 source using the required administrator account.
3Grant access to the OneDrive sites that must be protected.
4Select the required user accounts, folders or supported content.
5Start the backup and review the logs.
6Run recurring backups to keep the protected copy current.

RestoreStep 7

7When recovery is needed, open the restore workflow, select the protected backup, connect to the target tenant and map the required content.

Define recovery objectives (RPO and RTO)

Two targets shape the plan. Active users and critical departments usually justify a tighter RPO than dormant accounts.

RPO

Recovery point objective

How much recent change you can afford to lose between protected states, which sets how often backups run.

RTO

Recovery time objective

How quickly recovered content must be back with users, which influences how narrowly you scope each restore.

Objective	Question it answers	What it drives
RPO	How much recent change can we lose?	Backup frequency and incremental schedule
RTO	How fast must content be restored?	Restore scope and destination choice
Retention	How long must the copy be kept?	Repository capacity planning

Common OneDrive restore scenarios

Granular

Restore deleted files or folders

Recover only the affected protected content when a user accidentally deletes or changes data.

Larger incidents

Restore broader account content

For larger incidents, use the protected OneDrive account data as the recovery source.

Cross-tenant

Restore to another Microsoft 365 tenant

The current EdbMails product content states that backed-up OneDrive data can be restored to the same or another Microsoft 365 tenant. See restore OneDrive backup to another tenant.

Same-tenant vs different-tenant restore

Same-tenant restore

Appropriate for normal recovery after accidental deletion or unwanted changes.

Accidental deletionUnwanted changes

Different-tenant restore

Useful during tenant replacement, restructuring, consolidation or disaster-recovery testing.

Tenant replacementRestructuringConsolidationDisaster-recovery testing

Prepare the destination with the required OneDrive sites, administrator access and mapping before starting a cross-tenant restore.

Customer-selected storage

Local storage

External drive

Network storage

Backup storage and incremental protection

Protected data is stored on customer-selected local, external or network storage, so your organization decides where the copy resides and how it is secured. After the first full backup, later runs operate incrementally to process only new or changed content. See OneDrive incremental backup and OneDrive backup to local storage.

Verify every restore

A backup is only proven by a successful restore.

Files and folders present and usable

Job logs reviewed

Manual follow-up recorded

Permissions verified explicitly

Sharing verified explicitly

Test restore to a low-risk location

After restore, sign in to the target OneDrive location and confirm the required files and folders are present and usable, review the job logs, and record any content requiring manual follow-up. Where permissions or sharing matter, verify them explicitly rather than assuming they carried across. Run a test restore into a low-risk location before relying on the process.

OneDrive backup and restore checklist

Identify the accounts and folders that need protection.

Confirm administrator access and OneDrive site permissions.

Estimate account sizes and choose a repository with room to grow.

Run and verify the first full backup.

Schedule recurring incremental runs to match your RPO.

Test representative file, folder and account restores.

Document cross-tenant recovery requirements.

Review scope when users join, leave or change role.
