Does EdbMails migrate SharePoint permissions?

The supplied EdbMails SharePoint content lists permissions and groups among supported SharePoint data. Because tenant identities and permission models can differ, critical permissions should be validated during pilot and post-migration testing.

Why can SharePoint permissions differ after tenant migration?

Source users, groups, domains and target governance can differ between tenants, so identity mapping and business ownership must be reviewed.

Should I migrate permissions without preparing target identities?

No. Confirm the required target users and groups exist or are otherwise planned before relying on permission migration.

What permissions should I validate first?

Prioritize site owners, critical SharePoint groups, unique permissions and business-sensitive libraries or folders.

Can permission validation be part of the pilot migration?

Yes. A representative pilot is one of the best places to verify target access before larger production waves.

Does EdbMails support source-to-target identity mapping for permissions?

EdbMails provides source-to-target mapping with automatic, manual and previously saved options, which helps align source owners and groups with the correct target identities before you validate access.

What Microsoft Entra setup is needed for permission-aware migration?

EdbMails uses separate Source and Target Microsoft Entra app registrations with documented application permissions and admin consent, configured before you connect each tenant.

How are unique or broken-inheritance permissions handled?

Identify sites, libraries, folders or items with unique permissions before migration, then test representative content after migration to confirm the access behaves as expected in the target.

Can incremental migration affect permissions?

Incremental passes process supported new or modified content, so review owners, members and important groups again after a later pass to confirm access still matches the plan.

Where can I review permission results after migration?

Review the EdbMails migration logs for failed or skipped items and check the target site owners, members and groups as part of post-migration permission validation.

Should permission changes during a merger or divestiture be planned in advance?

Yes. Decide which owners, groups and external relationships should be retained, recreated or removed before production migration so the target reflects the approved access model.

Understanding SharePoint Permission Migration

SharePoint permissions are a critical part of many migration projects because access determines who can view, edit or manage migrated content in the target environment. The supplied EdbMails SharePoint content references migration of permissions and groups as part of supported SharePoint data, but permission behavior can vary by site structure, target identities and tenant configuration. For that reason, permissions should be explicitly validated during pilot and post-migration testing.

This page focuses on permission planning and validation around EdbMails SharePoint migration, with pilot and post-migration checks for the access that matters to the business.

Why SharePoint permission migration needs careful planning

Source users or groups may not exist in the target tenant.

Target user identities may use different sign-in names or domains.

Some sites inherit permissions while others use unique permissions.

Business ownership may change during mergers, consolidations or divestitures.

Target governance rules may require different access than the source environment.

Permission areas to assess before migration

Area	Planning question
Site owners	Do the source owners exist in the target tenant and should they retain ownership?
Members and visitors	Are the required target identities available and correctly mapped?
SharePoint groups	Which groups are business-critical and must be validated in the target?
Inherited permissions	Does the target structure preserve the same inheritance model?
Unique permissions	Which sites, libraries, folders or items require closer validation?
External access	Should guest or external-sharing relationships remain, be recreated or be removed?

How permissions fit into EdbMails SharePoint migration

The existing EdbMails SharePoint content lists permissions and groups among the SharePoint data it can migrate. Because real SharePoint environments can contain different identity and permission models, treat permission migration as a validated project requirement rather than an automatic assumption.

Pre-migration permission checklist

Identify critical SharePoint site owners and members.

Document important SharePoint groups.

Find sites with unique permissions or broken inheritance.

Confirm corresponding target users or groups exist where required.

Review guest and external-sharing requirements.

Record sites that require formal permission validation after migration.

Permission-aware migration workflow

Assess source identities and permission structures.

Prepare target users, groups and ownership where required.

Run a representative pilot migration.

Review the target site's owners, members and important groups.

Check representative libraries or folders with unique access.

Document differences and update the target preparation plan.

Proceed with production migration waves.

Validate critical permissions again after migration.

Post-migration permission validation

Validation check	Recommended action
Site ownership	Confirm the intended target owners can administer the migrated site.
Standard access	Verify representative members and visitors have the expected access.
Critical groups	Review important SharePoint groups and membership.
Unique permissions	Test representative content that does not inherit standard site permissions.
Removed identities	Check for source identities that should not retain target access.
Business acceptance	Ask site owners to confirm that access is appropriate for target operations.

Permissions migration during mergers and divestitures

M&A and divestiture projects often involve identity changes. A source SharePoint owner may become a different target user, a source group may not exist in the destination, or some users may intentionally lose access. Build these identity decisions into the migration plan before production migration.

Validate permissions instead of assuming identical fidelity

Do not assume that every permission or identity relationship will transfer identically in every tenant-to-tenant scenario. Validate the permission structures that matter to the business using a pilot and post-migration checks, especially when source and target identities differ.
