What does "Teams backup" actually protect?

The full Teams workload: chats, channel posts, Planner, tabs and Microsoft 365 Groups, together with the files, document libraries and OneDrive content behind each team.

Does EdbMails back up Teams chats and channel messages?

Yes. EdbMails backs up Teams chats and channel posts, along with Planner, tabs and Microsoft 365 Groups, as part of the Teams workload.

Can I restore to a different Microsoft 365 tenant?

Yes. Protected content can be restored to the same or another Microsoft 365 tenant.

Where is the backup stored?

On a customer-selected location such as local or supported network storage, not an EdbMails-hosted repository.

Can I recover just a few files instead of everything?

Yes. Recovery can target selected protected files or folders rather than the whole scope.

Is a backup the same as Microsoft's own retention?

No. Retention is a governance control inside Microsoft 365; a backup is an independent protected copy you control.

How do I know my restore will work when needed?

Test it. Run a representative restore with low-risk data so the permissions, mapping and validation steps are proven before a real incident.

Will sharing and permissions be preserved on restore?

Verify any business-critical sharing and permissions explicitly in the destination after restore rather than assuming they carried across.

Does backup run incrementally after the first run?

The first backup is full and later runs to the same location can process newly added items incrementally.

How long will a backup take?

It depends on item count and size, Microsoft 365 responsiveness, network and storage performance; no fixed duration is guaranteed.

What should I check right after a restore?

Confirm the expected content is in the intended site, that users can open it, and review the restore logs for errors.

Build Microsoft Teams backup around scope, storage, and regular testing

Microsoft Teams keeps much of its working data in the SharePoint and OneDrive sites behind each team, so backing up and restoring Teams data in practice means protecting and recovering that supported site content. EdbMails uses the documented SharePoint/OneDrive backup workflow to protect supported Teams-connected files, documents and site content to storage you control, and can restore it to the same or another Microsoft 365 tenant. For the product overview, see Microsoft Teams Backup.

Plan backup and restore as one recovery workflow

Backup and restore are two halves of the same objective: being able to recover supported Teams-connected content after deletion, unwanted change or a destructive incident. Plan them together, decide what must be recoverable, how far back, and to where, rather than treating the backup as finished once the first job runs. A backup you have never restored from is an assumption, not a recovery capability.

Protect the files shared in Microsoft Teams

Keep copies of the documents and folders your team shares through Microsoft Teams. EdbMails backs up supported Teams-connected file content stored in SharePoint, helping you restore important documents when the originals are deleted, changed or no longer available.

How the EdbMails workflow works

Create the backup job and select a customer-controlled storage location.
Connect to the Microsoft 365 source environment.
Grant the required access to the relevant Teams-connected SharePoint sites.
Select the supported sites, folders or documents to protect.
Start the backup and review completion logs.
Use the restore workflow when recovery is required.

Supported recovery scenarios

Selective recovery

Recover selected protected files or folders.

Original tenant

Restore supported protected content to the original tenant.

Another tenant

Restore supported protected content to another Microsoft 365 tenant.

Keep Teams documents ready for recovery

A practical file backup workflow

Back up channel filesStore copies locallyRun incremental backupsRestore selected documentsRecover foldersChoose a supported destination

EdbMails helps you retain recoverable copies of supported Teams-connected documents outside their original locations. Run an initial backup, repeat the backup to capture supported changes, and restore the required files or folders when needed. Check the restored documents in their destination to make sure your team can use them.

Restore validation

After recovery, confirm the content in its destination: that the expected files and folders are present in the intended site, that users can open them, and that anything business-critical such as sharing is checked explicitly rather than assumed. A small, representative restore test before an incident is the most reliable way to confirm permissions, mapping and validation steps are understood. See granular Teams backup and restore and cross-tenant restore.

Performance factors

Backup and restore duration depends on Microsoft 365 service responsiveness and throttling, network throughput, item count and size, storage performance and the selected scope. No fixed speed or zero-downtime outcome should be assumed; plan windows around real data volume and account for Microsoft 365 throttling on large jobs.
