How Microsoft 365 Groups Backup and Restore Works

A Microsoft 365 Group connects multiple collaboration services, so backup and restore work best as a workload-aware recovery process. EdbMails protects and recovers the complete Group across its product line: Group-connected SharePoint sites and files through the SharePoint and OneDrive backup workflow, the Group mailbox and calendar through Office 365 (Exchange) backup, and connected Teams through Microsoft Teams backup.

Administrators select the resources in scope, store backup data in a customer-controlled repository, and later load the protected data to restore it to the original location or another suitable target.

Microsoft 365 Groups backup and restore workflow

Stage	Administrator action
Scope	Identify the Group-connected resources in scope: SharePoint site, Group mailbox, Teams and other services.
Backup	Protect each resource with its matching EdbMails workflow and save content to the chosen repository.
Validation	Review backup progress and logs and confirm representative items are present.
Restore preparation	Open the matching restore workflow, add the stored backup and connect to the destination environment.
Mapping	Map the protected source content to the required target location.
Restore	Start the restore and review the resulting logs before closing the recovery task.

When is a Microsoft 365 Groups restore useful?

Recovering files after accidental deletion or overwrite.

Restoring mailbox items or calendar entries removed from the Group mailbox.

Recovering Teams channel content connected to the Group.

Restoring selected site content after an unwanted bulk change.

Recovering protected content into another suitable target site or tenant.

Testing recovery procedures as part of business continuity planning.

Restore each Group workload with its matching workflow

A full Group restore combines workload-specific recoveries. Use the SharePoint and OneDrive restore workflow for the site and files, Office 365 (Exchange) restore for the Group mailbox and calendar, and Microsoft Teams restore for connected Teams. Group identity, owners and members are re-applied as part of target-side configuration. Record the intended recovery scope and validate each workload after the operation.
