MBOX File Converter for PST, EML, HTML and MHT

PSTEMLHTMLMHT

Download MBOX File Converter

Preview

Load the MBOX source and review the available mailbox content before export.

Choose a supported format

Use PST for Outlook-oriented storage, EML for individual message files, or HTML/MHT when a web-style message representation is more useful.

Validate the result

After conversion, review representative messages, attachments and folders in the chosen destination before retiring the source archive.

Choose the right MBOX output format

PST

Use PST when Microsoft Outlook-compatible mailbox storage is the requirement. If PST is your only requirement, use the dedicated MBOX to PST Converter.

EML

Use EML when you need individual message files that can be handled separately rather than one mailbox container.

HTML

Use HTML when email content needs a browser-readable representation for review or portable reference.

MHT / MHTML

Use MHT where a web-archive style output is suitable for storing the message representation as a single file.

Convert MBOX from common email sources

EdbMails supports mailbox files created by or exported from Thunderbird, Apple Mail, Google Takeout, Eudora, Entourage, Opera Mail, SeaMonkey, PocoMail, Netscape, Sylpheed, Claws Mail and other MBOX-based applications.

Different applications may use a visible .mbox extension, another mailbox extension, or no extension at all. The source format and the final destination matter more than the filename alone, so preview the mailbox before beginning a production conversion.

When to use the broad MBOX File Converter

You have mixed output requirements

Use this page when one project may require PST for Outlook, EML for individual messages, or HTML/MHT for portable review.

You are consolidating old mailbox archives

Legacy MBOX files can come from several email clients. Preview them, confirm the source, and then choose the required export format instead of assuming every archive should become PST.

You need a live destination instead

If Microsoft 365 or Exchange Server is the final target, use the dedicated migration workflow rather than creating an intermediate export file unless your project specifically requires one.

How to choose between PST, EML, HTML and MHT

Output	Use it when	Practical consideration
PST	You need an Outlook-oriented mailbox archive.	A PST is a mailbox container, so validate it in the supported Outlook environment that will actually be used.
EML	You want individual email files rather than one mailbox database.	Large mailboxes can create many separate files, which may be useful for selective handling but require more filesystem organization.
HTML	You need browser-readable message content for reference or review.	HTML is convenient for viewing, but it is not a replacement for a live mailbox or an Outlook mailbox database.
MHT	You prefer a web-archive style representation of email content.	Use it for portability or review where supported; confirm how your target application handles MHT files.

MBOX conversion features that matter in real projects

Multiple source files

MBOX projects often involve more than one file because source applications can maintain separate mailbox files for Inbox, Sent, custom folders or different profiles. EdbMails supports adding multiple MBOX files so the conversion can be planned as a set rather than as isolated one-off jobs.

Source preview

Preview gives users a chance to confirm that the correct mailbox was selected before output files are created. This is particularly important for archives with generic names or files copied from several old systems.

Selective export

EdbMails provides filters and item-level selection. Use them when the project needs only a particular date range, sender, recipient, subject, attachment condition, folder or subset of the archive.

PST size management

EdbMails supports splitting PST output. When PST is the output, plan a destination structure that users and administrators can manage rather than generating one unnecessarily large archive by default.

Unicode and older client sources

Legacy mailbox data can contain non-English text, unusual encodings and mail generated by clients that are no longer maintained. Include representative samples in your validation rather than checking only recent English messages.

Operation reporting

Use conversion reports and logs as part of the validation process. They are useful for identifying the folders processed and for comparing the expected source set with the exported result.

Common mistakes when converting MBOX files

Mistake 1

Choosing PST automatically

PST is the right choice when Outlook-compatible mailbox storage is the requirement. It is not automatically the best destination for every archive. If users need individual files, EML may fit better; if the final target is Microsoft 365, direct migration may be preferable.

Mistake 2

Processing the only copy

Keep the original MBOX archive untouched until conversion and validation are complete. Work from a copy when the source is an important backup or the only surviving mailbox.

Mistake 3

Ignoring source application differences

A Google Takeout archive, a Thunderbird Local Folder and an Apple Mail export can all be MBOX-related sources, but their surrounding folder structures and metadata are not identical.

Mistake 4

Skipping destination validation

A successful progress message is not the end of the project. Open representative output files, inspect messages and attachments, and confirm that the chosen output works in the actual destination application.

Plan an MBOX conversion project before you click Export

A reliable conversion is easier when the source set, output format and validation method are decided in advance.

Inventory the source files

List the MBOX files, their approximate sizes, source applications and users. A folder full of archives from different clients should not be treated as one undifferentiated batch.

Define the output naming strategy

Decide how converted PST, EML, HTML or MHT output will be named and grouped. Consistent naming is especially important when several source files have generic names such as Inbox, Sent or Archive.

Choose a validation sample

Select messages with attachments, non-English content, old dates, long threads and nested folders where available. These make a stronger test set than a handful of recent plain-text messages.

Estimate temporary storage

Keep room for source copies, working data and destination output. If several large mailboxes are converted in parallel, disk capacity can become a project constraint before CPU performance does.

Decide what not to convert

Filters can reduce unnecessary output when retention rules or business requirements exclude obsolete folders, date ranges or specific message classes. Define those rules before the final run.

Preserve the source until sign-off

Keep the original mailbox archive until the output has been reviewed by the appropriate user or administrator. Conversion should not be the trigger for immediate source deletion.

Run a pilot batch first

For a large set of MBOX files, run one pilot batch first. Use the pilot to confirm output format, folder organization, PST split settings where applicable, expected item coverage and the amount of time/storage required. Then apply the proven settings to the remaining archives rather than changing options midway through the project.
