Where are Thunderbird MBOX message files stored?

Thunderbird profile folders contain mailbox message files for local or downloaded mail. In common MBOX storage, the message file can use the folder name with no extension.

Is the Thunderbird .msf file the mailbox I should convert?

No. Mozilla support documentation identifies .msf files as indexes. The mailbox message store is the corresponding file without the .msf suffix.

Can EdbMails convert Thunderbird mailbox files to PST?

Yes. EdbMails supports Thunderbird mailbox files and converts them to PST.

Do I need PST if I am moving Thunderbird mail to Microsoft 365?

Not always. If Microsoft 365 is the final destination, use the EdbMails MBOX Migration Tool rather than generating PST only as an intermediate step.

Can I preview Thunderbird mail before conversion?

Yes. Use the EdbMails MBOX viewer to inspect supported mailbox content before exporting to PST.

What should I do with IMAP mail that is still on the mail server?

If the required messages still exist in the live server mailbox, a file conversion may not be necessary for those items. Identify local-only archives and POP/Local Folders content separately before deciding what must be converted.

Thunderbird to PST for Microsoft Outlook

Move local Thunderbird mailbox archives into Outlook-compatible PST files with EdbMails. The key is to identify the actual Thunderbird mailbox message file, preview the source, convert the required data, and validate the PST before changing or deleting the Thunderbird profile.

Download EdbMails

Browse and add Thunderbird mailbox files in EdbMails

Understand Thunderbird mailbox files first

Thunderbird can store local mailbox message data in MBOX-style files that use the visible Thunderbird folder name but no filename extension. A matching .msf file may exist beside the mailbox; Mozilla support documentation describes the .msf file as an index that Thunderbird can recreate, not the message store itself.

For example, a Thunderbird folder named Inbox may have a mailbox data file named Inbox and an index named Inbox.msf. The message file is the source that matters for MBOX conversion.

Mozilla Support: Thunderbird mailbox and .msf files

Which Thunderbird mail actually needs conversion?

Local Folders archives

Messages stored only in Thunderbird Local Folders are not automatically recreated simply by signing into the same mail provider elsewhere. These local mailbox files are common candidates for PST conversion.

Old POP account mail

POP workflows can leave historical messages stored locally on the old computer. Identify those mailbox files before decommissioning the Thunderbird profile.

IMAP mail still available on the server

If the required mail still exists in the provider mailbox, conversion may not be necessary for that server-resident data. Separate local-only archives from mail that can simply resynchronize in the destination environment.

How to convert Thunderbird MBOX to PST with EdbMails

1
Step 1
Locate the Thunderbird profile or exported mailbox files
Identify the mailbox message files required for transfer. Do not select .msf index files as the source message store.
2
Step 2
Make a working copy
Preserve the original Thunderbird profile or mailbox files until the conversion and validation are complete.
3
Step 3
Open EdbMails MBOX Export and Migration
Choose MBOX to PST and add the required Thunderbird mailbox files.
4
Step 4
Choose the PST output location
Ensure the conversion computer has sufficient free storage for the working data and resulting PST files.
5
Step 5
Preview and select the required source data
Review folders and representative messages before starting the export.
6
Step 6
Start the PST export and review the report
After completion, open the PST in the intended Outlook environment and verify representative messages, attachments and folders.

Thunderbird migration validation checklist

Folder coverage

Confirm Inbox, Sent, custom folders and local archives that matter to the user or organization.

Message sampling

Open messages from several dates and folders and compare sender, recipient, subject and message body details.

Attachments

Check representative messages with attachments rather than validating only plain-text messages.

Large folders

Review the largest local mailbox folders separately; they are more likely to reveal storage, performance or source-condition issues.

Outlook access

Open the resulting PST in the intended supported Outlook environment and confirm that users can browse the expected content.

Source retention

Keep the Thunderbird source/profile backup until the destination has passed the agreed validation checks.

How Thunderbird mailbox storage can affect your migration plan

Local Folders can contain unique mail

Mail moved into Thunderbird Local Folders may no longer have an equivalent copy on the mail server. Inventory these folders separately before replacing the computer or deleting the old profile.

POP accounts often leave local history

Older POP configurations may have downloaded mail to the local machine. A new Outlook sign-in cannot recreate messages that are no longer stored on the server.

IMAP folders can be server-resident

If the source account is still active and all required mail remains on the IMAP server, you may not need file conversion for that content. Conversion is most relevant for local-only or archived mail that cannot simply resynchronize.

Each visible folder may map to its own mailbox file

Thunderbird MBOX storage commonly represents a folder with a mailbox file of the same name. A complete migration may therefore require a set of mailbox files rather than a single file.

Subfolders have surrounding profile structure

Thunderbird can use supporting directories for nested folders. Preserve the complete profile backup during discovery so you can reconstruct which mailbox files belong together.

.msf files can be ignored for message conversion

The .msf file is an index Thunderbird can rebuild. It helps identify the related mailbox filename, but it is not the message store that should be converted to PST.

Thunderbird to PST project checklist

Identify all Thunderbird profiles

A computer can contain more than one profile, especially after upgrades or manual profile creation.

List local and POP folders that must be retained

Separate them from server-backed IMAP folders that can be resynchronized.

Back up the complete source profile

Keep the original profile before copying individual mailbox files into a conversion working folder.

Ignore .msf files as conversion sources

Use the corresponding mailbox message files, which may have no extension.

Run a pilot conversion

Include Inbox, Sent and at least one custom/local folder with attachments and older messages.

Validate in Outlook

Check folder visibility, representative messages, dates, attachments and any business-critical content.

Document what was migrated

Keep a record of the source files, destination PSTs and any excluded folders.

When Thunderbird to PST is not the only option

Moving to Microsoft 365

If users are moving from local Thunderbird archives into Microsoft 365 mailboxes, compare direct MBOX migration with the two-step MBOX-to-PST-then-import route. Direct migration may reduce intermediate file handling.

Moving to Exchange Server

For supported Exchange Server targets, use the dedicated MBOX-to-Exchange workflow rather than generating PST automatically.

Only a few messages are required

For a very small set, individual-message export methods may be sufficient. A PST converter is more useful when you need structured mailbox transfer, many folders or large local archives.

Mail is still fully available on the server

If the destination can synchronize the same live account and no local-only data must be preserved, file conversion may add work without adding value. Audit the source before choosing a conversion path.

Common Thunderbird to Outlook migration mistakes

Mistake 1

Converting .msf files

.msf files are indexes, not the mailbox message data. Select the corresponding no-extension mailbox file or other actual MBOX source.

Mistake 2

Missing Local Folders

Users often focus on the configured account Inbox and forget local archives. Inventory Local Folders before the old profile is retired.

Mistake 3

Deleting the old profile too early

Keep the source profile and mailbox backup until the destination PST has passed the agreed validation process.

Mistake 4

Assuming server mail equals local mail

POP mail, manually moved messages and archived Local Folders may exist only on the computer. Compare the local profile against what is visible in webmail.

Mistake 5

Validating only recent Inbox mail

Test older folders, Sent mail, custom folders, attachments and non-English messages if those are part of the source.

Mistake 6

Choosing PST when the real target is cloud

If Microsoft 365 or Exchange is the final destination, evaluate the direct migration workflow before creating an intermediate PST layer.

How to identify the correct Thunderbird source files

The conversion itself is straightforward once the correct Thunderbird mailbox files have been identified.

1
Find the active Thunderbird profile
Thunderbird profiles typically contain account-specific mail directories and a Local Folders area. If the computer has been used for years, there may be older inactive profiles too.
2
Look for mailbox files named after Thunderbird folders
In common MBOX storage, a visible Thunderbird folder such as Inbox or Sent can correspond to a file with that exact name and no extension.
3
Use .msf files only as clues
A file such as Inbox.msf is an index. It often helps you recognize that a related mailbox named Inbox exists, but the .msf file itself is not the message archive to convert.
4
Preserve nested-folder structure
Thunderbird may use supporting directories for subfolders. Copy the complete relevant profile/mail area to your backup before selecting individual MBOX files for conversion.
5
Separate Local Folders from server-backed mail
Local Folders and POP archives may contain unique data. IMAP folders may be replaceable by server synchronization if the live mailbox still retains the messages.
6
Document what you selected
For each PST produced, record the source Thunderbird profile/folder files so that validation or troubleshooting can trace the output back to the original mailbox.

Message files vs .msf indexes

Mozilla support guidance consistently distinguishes the no-extension message files from the .msf index files. That distinction is important because older MBOX documentation on the web sometimes describes “MSF to PST” loosely even though the .msf index itself does not contain the mailbox messages.

Thunderbird to PST for one user vs many users

Single-user conversion

A personal move can usually start by identifying Local Folders, choosing the required mailbox files, running a trial conversion and opening the result in Outlook. The main risk is overlooking old local folders that are no longer on the server.

Department or enterprise archive set

For many users, build an inventory first: profile path, source file count, approximate size, destination, retention status and validation owner. This prevents similarly named Inbox or Sent files from different users being mixed during batch work.

Workstation retirement project

Do not wipe or reimage the old machine until local mail has been inventoried and backed up. A user may believe everything is synchronized while years of Local Folders exist only on disk.

Cloud transition project

If the organization is standardizing on Microsoft 365, compare direct MBOX migration with PST conversion. PST may still be valuable for archive retention, but it should be a deliberate deliverable rather than an accidental intermediate format.
