When do I need OneDrive user migration?

When selected employees are moving, user principal names or domains change, business units are reorganized, only certain users belong in a merger or divestiture wave, or a pilot group must move first.

Can I migrate only selected users?

Yes. EdbMails loads available OneDrive sites and lets administrators select the users in scope instead of processing the entire tenant.

How do I map users when names or domains change?

Use automatic, manual and previous-mapping options, keep an explicit source-to-target mapping list, and review the mappings before production migration.

Can multiple users migrate at once?

Yes. EdbMails supports simultaneous migration of multiple OneDrive sites, and larger projects can be grouped into manageable batches.

Can users stay active during migration?

Yes. Run a subsequent incremental pass for supported new or modified data, and for an already-migrated site keep the same migration computer so the local incremental metadata is available.

How does incremental migration work for users?

EdbMails stores certain migration metadata locally in encrypted form for the incremental check and recommends using the same computer for consecutive runs of an already-migrated site.

Do I need Microsoft Entra app registration?

Yes. Separate source and target Microsoft Entra ID applications with documented permissions and admin consent are required.

How do I validate migrated users?

Review the migration logs and sign in to representative target OneDrive accounts, confirming each source user mapped to the intended destination and that expected files and folders are present.

Is user migration the same as bulk migration?

User migration focuses on selected users and correct mapping, while bulk migration coordinates many users in waves. The two approaches work together.

How OneDrive User Migration Works

OneDrive user migration moves supported OneDrive for Business content from selected source users to the corresponding destination users in another Microsoft 365 tenant. It is especially useful when only part of the organization is moving, when source and target user names differ, or when administrators need to process users in controlled migration waves.

The current EdbMails OneDrive migration workflow allows administrators to load available OneDrive sites, select the users in scope, map source OneDrive sites to the appropriate target users, migrate multiple accounts, run later incremental passes for supported changes, and review the migration results through logs.

When do you need OneDrive user migration?

Selected employees are moving to another Microsoft 365 tenant.

User principal names or domains change between source and target.

Departments or business units are being reorganized.

Only certain OneDrive users belong in a merger, acquisition or divestiture migration wave.

A pilot group must be migrated before the wider organization.

Identify and prepare the users in scope

Start with a clean migration inventory. Record the source user, target user, source OneDrive site, destination account, business owner and migration wave. Confirm that the target users exist and that their OneDrive sites are ready before the migration begins.

Where users are renamed or moved to a different domain, do not rely only on automatic matching. Keep an explicit source-to-target mapping list for review.

Load OneDrive users in EdbMails

The EdbMails OneDrive guide documents automatic loading of available OneDrive sites and a CSV option for additional sites that are not listed. Administrators can then select the required user sites for migration instead of processing the entire tenant.

Map source users to target users

EdbMails supports automatic, manual and previous-mapping options. Automatic mapping can reduce repetitive work, but administrators should review the mappings before production migration, especially when account names, domains or destination ownership have changed.

Migrate multiple users in controlled batches

The current EdbMails content documents simultaneous migration of multiple OneDrive sites. For larger projects, group users into manageable batches so mapping, progress, logs and exceptions can be reviewed before moving to the next wave.

Handle active users with incremental migration

If users continue working in the source OneDrive during the migration period, run a subsequent incremental pass for supported new or modified data. For an already-migrated site, retain the same migration computer so the locally stored encrypted incremental metadata remains available.

Validate migrated users after each batch

Review migration logs and sign in to representative target OneDrive accounts. Confirm that each source user mapped to the intended destination and that expected files and folders are present. Where sharing, metadata or business ownership matters, validate those requirements explicitly.
