Google Workspace Divestiture and Carve-Out Migration

Separate selected Google Workspace users and data during a carve-out

EdbMails supports organizations that need to move selected Google Workspace users and supported data into a separate destination environment during a divestiture or business carve-out. Define the users in scope, map them to the appropriate target accounts, use selective migration settings, migrate in planned batches, and perform incremental passes before the separation is completed.

Control the scope of your Google Workspace divestiture migration

A Google Workspace divestiture or carve-out migration separates a defined set of users from an existing organization and moves them into a new or separately managed Google Workspace environment. This is common during business-unit sales, spin-offs, legal-entity separation, joint-venture changes, and other corporate restructuring.

Unlike consolidation, a carve-out requires precise scope control. Only the users and supported data included in the transaction should move, while the remaining organization continues operating in the source environment.

Precise scope Clean separation Incremental sync

Why scope control defines a carve-out

In a divestiture the hardest requirement is not moving data but moving exactly the right data and nothing else. Because the source keeps running, a precise included-users list and strong selective-migration controls are the backbone of the project — the mapping defines both what moves and what explicitly must not.

What moves

Only the users and supported data included in the transaction — carried to the new environment under an explicit mapping.

What stays

Retained users and data remain in the source organization, which continues operating without gaps or exposure.

Define the carve-out scope

Create a definitive list of users included in the separation, with the target address for each. Document the users and data that must remain in the source organization just as carefully.

Scope element	Why it matters	Action
Included users	Only these move to the new environment	Maintain a definitive list with target addresses.
Retained users	Must stay in the source organization	Mark explicitly as excluded from migration.
Supported data types	Sets expectations in the target	Confirm email, calendars, contacts, tasks and labels per user.
Shared identities	Can belong to either side	Decide ownership before migration.

Prepare the new Google Workspace environment

Create the target users, assign required licenses, configure the target domain and verify administrator access before production migration. If target addresses change, create and review a complete source-to-target mapping.

Create target users Assign licenses Configure domain Verify admin access

Use selective migration controls

Selective migration is particularly important for carve-outs. Use supported mailbox, folder and filter controls to limit the migration to the approved users and eligible content.

Migration settings

Step-by-step carve-out migration

1
List included and retained users
Produce the definitive list of included users and document retained users.
2
Prepare the target environment
Prepare the new target environment, licenses, domain and administrator access.
3
Build a scoped mapping
Build a source-to-target mapping limited strictly to the carve-out scope.
4
Apply selective controls
Apply selective-migration controls to enforce that scope.
5
Run a pilot
Run a pilot with representative users from the carve-out group.
6
Validate the pilot
Validate target access, mapping, email, calendars, contacts, tasks and reports.
7
Run the production migration
Run the production migration for the included users.
8
Run incremental passes
Run incremental passes to capture supported new or changed data before separation.
9
Verify and complete changes
Verify the destination and complete any mail-flow or domain changes.

Running the separation

Pilot the separation

Choose representative users from the carve-out group and run a pilot. Confirm target access, mailbox mapping, message history, calendars, contacts, tasks and migration reports before scaling up. The pilot also confirms that excluded users and data are correctly left behind.

Migrate while the source remains active

Perform the initial migration while users still work in the source. Use incremental follow-up runs to process supported new or changed data before the agreed separation point.

Best practices for divestiture

Treat the excluded list as critical

The excluded list is as important as the included list — verify both in the pilot.

Lock scope with selective controls

Enforce the carve-out scope with selective-migration controls rather than manual selection during production.

Keep the source fully operational

Keep the source organization running for the remaining business throughout the project.

Schedule the final incremental pass

Run the final incremental pass close to the agreed separation point so the moved group is current at handover.

Common issues to watch for

Scope leakage

An out-of-scope user or item moves. Prevent it with a definitive included/excluded list and selective controls validated in the pilot.

Missed shared identities

Shared identities whose ownership was never decided. Record each ownership decision in the mapping before migration.

Address changes for moved users

Verify changed addresses so data lands on the correct new accounts in the target.

Final transition and verification

Verify migrated data, user access and any required mail-flow or domain changes before source access is removed. Keep the source available for the agreed validation and retention period where business or legal requirements permit.

Talk to support

Divestiture vs consolidation

Divestiture separates an approved group into a new Google Workspace environment, while consolidation brings multiple Google Workspace environments into one target organization.

Divestiture

Moves only the approved users and supported data in the carve-out scope to a separate target environment.

Consolidation

Brings users and supported data from multiple Google Workspace environments into one target organization.

Google Workspace consolidation migration See the reverse scenario: combine multiple Google Workspace environments into one target. Google Workspace migration for mergers & acquisitions For migration projects involving mergers, acquisitions, or organizational integration.

Frequently asked questions

What is a Google Workspace carve-out migration?
It separates a defined set of users and supported data from one Google Workspace organization and moves them to another managed environment.
Why is selective migration important in a divestiture?
Because only users and data included in the separation scope should move while the remaining organization stays in the source.
Can users continue working during the initial migration?
Yes. The source can remain available while the initial transfer runs, followed by supported incremental passes before transition.
Is divestiture the same as consolidation?
No. Divestiture separates a defined group from an environment; consolidation combines multiple environments into a target.
How do I make sure out-of-scope users are not moved?
Maintain a definitive included/excluded list and enforce it with supported selective-migration controls, then confirm it in the pilot.

Which data types can be carved out?
The documented API-based workflow supports email, attachments, calendars, contacts, tasks and label organization. Confirm the exact scope during the pilot.
How are shared identities handled?
Decide which side owns each shared identity before migration and record that decision in the mapping so it is not duplicated or missed.
When can source access be removed for moved users?
Only after migrated data and target access are verified and any agreed validation or retention period is complete.
Is technical support available?
Yes. EdbMails provides 24/7 free technical support during divestiture and carve-out projects.
